Abstract:
This is a Patient-Oriented Problem-Solving exercise designed to promote group learning, used in our sophomore year, as part of the Infection and Immunity course. A group of physicians with different areas of expertise, including microbiologists, immunologists, infectious disease specialists, geriatric medicine specialists, and an ethicist, was involved in the development of the package, which was successfully tested last fall. The contents are arranged into four sections that are distributed among four students that work as a group. The information in each section is different, so the members of a group need to exchange information to be able to solve the problem case. This case covers a variety of significant issues: infections in the elderly, antibiotic resistance, nosocomial infections, septic shock, and termination of life support. A multiple choice pre-test and post-test are included in the case, as well as color pictures, comments about the case, and explained answers to the questions of both tests.
Educational objectives:
The learner will be able to: 1) Apply basic science knowledge to the solution of clinical problems. 2) Learn how to better use sources (i.e., textbooks and peers) that will be available to them throughout their career. 3) Work with fellow students and thus by increasing their ability to evaluate their colleagues' opinions, thought processes, and diagnoses, also increase their communication skills and help students get to know their classmates better.
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:
QuickTime movie player and Java script runtime plug-in scripts are required for some pages. The tutorial concludes with a short self-help quiz covering the major points developed in the tutorial. The plug-ins noted above are available free at the following sites: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html and http://www.sun.com/

A great product for use in the pre-clinical years, especially for an inter-session multidisciplinary or PBL approach exercise. IT focuses on an ID case, but incorporates goals of care, risks to the elderly. Although it touches on many of these areas, its true strength is as an attitudinal/knowledge tool for the general understanding of the risks elderly people have as opposed to a targeted tool for specific competencies. A terrific way to add geriatric education into the pre-clinical curriculum.
Would benefit from faculty development to strategize how to help students reach the geriatric points in addition to the ID points.
