Council of Elders for Medical Students
Indiana University School of Medicine
|
Product ID: 18834 |
Abstract:
This product is based on the original Council of Elders (CoE) introduced at Harvard for residents (Katz AM. A council of elders. Soc Sci Med 2000;50(6):851-860). The CoE is a panel of older adults who offer lay perspective on clinical care of older adults. The discussion with the CoE helps medical students enhance their communication skills with well older adults and offers a wonderful geriatrics experience to medical students early in their training. Additionally, at the beginning of the session medical students reflect on prior experiences with older adults (reflective writing) and at the end of the Council of Elders session, consider how this experience changed their perspective. To obtain a copy of the DVD, please contact Tracy Phillips at trp@iupui.edu
Educational objectives:
Learners will be able to:
- Communicate effectively with older adults.
- Establish positive attitudes about interacting with older adults.
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:
The session is conducted in small group format with at most 16 learners in the group. The session should occur in a room where there are tables distributed in a horse shoe arrangement with the Council seated at the top of the horse shoe. The set up of the room is important to the process. Auditorium style seating is the least effective arrangement for this educational experience.

The written instructions are not helpful. Also, the elders seemed to enjoy the exercise more than the medical students.
