Abstract:

These 12 PBLs reinforce positive attitudes toward aging, knowledge of related issues of health and disease, and skills in geriatric assessment. Students explore each PBL in groups of ten, guided by a team of faculty from basic science, clinical medicine, or an interdisciplinary school (allied health, nursing, pharm). Small group meets twice: first to discuss the case and identify issues for further study, then to report on literature searches. Problem-solving requires synthesis of basic science and clinical medicine.

Educational objectives:

This case-based modified PBL curriculum is used to immerse medical students in assessment and management of clinical challenges in geriatrics.

The modules aim to:

  1. Identify key issues and focused questions in basic science and clinical geriatrics, pertinent to the case under discussion.
  2. Apply techniques of evidence-based medicine to answer focused questions.
  3. Apply teaching findings to a small group in an organized and effective manner.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of core issues in geriatrics and related management.
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:

The TTUHSC curriculum has implemented this curriculum in all 4 years of the medical school, which includes approximately 140 students each year. Other schools have accessed this material as well. The learning environment is a medical school class, specifically in a small group PBL format. Train faculty facilitators in PBL methods. Help student identify focused questions that are not too broad. The MSII cases were adapted from the CATCHUM Project: http://www.catchum.utmb.edu
