Abstract:
CornellCARES.com offers innovative yet sensible practice tools, information, and resources to make geriatric mental health and psychosocial assessments and interventions easier and more effective for all health care and social service practitioners. There are three different sections on the website: 1) a Medicare mental health directory that lists over 1000 NYC-based Medicare mental health specialists; 2) "Ask Dr. Abrams," an interactive section of the site provides practitioners with the opportunity to ask for and receive general geriatric mental health information from a nationally known geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Robert Abrams; and 3) easily downloadable psychosocial patient educational handouts, which include valuable information and resources on many topics of concern to older adults. Educational objectives:
The goals of the site are to provide: 1) Information on pertinent mental health and social problems that older adults confront. 2) Resource options for accessing specialized treatment services. Learners will be able to: 1) Understand the range of psychosocial problems older people confront. 2) Have easily accessible resource information to give to older people regarding psychological and social problems.
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:
To date, 20,626 learners have used the web site. Types of learners have included medical students, practicing physicians, nurses, social workers, and consumers in medical school classes, faculty development workshops, ambulatory care practices, and people's homes. The instructor needs internet access to conduct a live demonstration of the web site.
