Ask the Informationist: Geriatrics Question of the Month
Our informationist, Carol Howe, MD, MLS, of the Information Services at Arizona Health Sciences Library and the Section of Geriatrics, University of Arizona College of Medicine, will post detailed answers to compelling geriatrics questions once a month on POGOe. We encourage you to submit questions and leave feedback in the comments section. This exciting new feature on POGOe can be accessed directly via the homepage (magnifying glass logo on top left) and easily navigated by the 'floating' menu that will follow you as you scroll down. Each entry contains a question, a summary of the answer, the complete answer, a bibliography, and a comments section. Dr. Howe will also indicate which of the Minimum Geriatric Competencies for Medical Students are addressed by the answer and these will be listed at the bottom of each answer page. To submit your question to the Informationist, navigate into the Ask the Informationist page and then select the link "Click to Submit a Question" on the upper right. The answer for this month's question, "How does age as a factor impact the experience of cancer pain in the elderly and its treatment?" can be viewed here http://www.pogoe.org/ask.

Delirium in Older Patients: An Online Case-Based Curriculum

The subtle differences between the presentations of delirium and dementia create much confusion for physicians who have not been trained to distinguish between the two cognitive dysfunctions. Serena Chao, M.D. of the Boston University School of Medicine has developed an interactive, multimedia online curriculum to help medical students in their clinical years recognize signs and symptoms of delirium. Dr. Chao's product, Delirium in Older Patients: An Online Case-Based Curriculum, takes advantage of the advances in e-learning formats to present a detailed summary of the vital aspects of delirium in older patients.

Designed specifically for medical students completing a required Geriatrics rotation or during a Medicine clerkship, this multi-faceted approach serves well as a supplement to clinical encounters. The Delirium in Older Patients: An Online Case-Based Curriculum product consists of two modules, each with separate videos and PowerPoint presentations that cover the broad topics of diagnosis, evaluation, and management of delirium. This product uses videos to simulate patient visits, mock patient charts to supplement the video component, and PowerPoint presentations providing didactic teaching methods and informal quizzes.

The Mini-Fellowships are 3 - 4 day intensive courses for non-geriatricians seeking training in geriatrics education and curriculum development.
