The American Medical Association’s Initiatives in Geriatrics

Aging was named one of 23 areas that the AMA is targeting over the next few years. Dr. Gadon provided an update on the Impact of Aging and Healthcare initiative which was established to identify, develop, and disseminate best practices in health care for the geriatric population.
Institute of Medicine (IOM): Future Health Care Workforce for Older Americans

The IOM report is scheduled to be released in March, 2008. Dr. Bernard spoke about the charge to The Future Health Care Workforce for Older Americans expert panel and the developments that are shaping the study.
The Care Transitions Program

The John A. Hartford Foundation\'s national study on care transitions - The Care Transitions Program, was developed in order to improve the discharge process, with an ultimate goal of improving health outcomes of older adults. Dr. Lyons spoke about the best practices in discharge and the training that is bringing the practices up to a higher standard.

Engagement with the Academic Community

This session was an interactive discussion of the infrastructure changes in grantee institutions to support educational scholarship. Participants discussed developing infrastructure to support clinician-educator academic promotion including clarification of the type of activities that may constitute scholarship, a system for reviewing scholarship; clarification of review criteria, faculty development, reward structures; repositories for shared materials, the use of institution-wide ‘academies’ or forums; mentoring and coaching, etc.
IRB Approval Process for Educational Research

Advocacy

The focus of this presentation was on raising awareness and developing partnerships between healthcare, medical and aging groups to propel changes in healthcare for older adults through advocacy and other strategies.
Loan Forgiveness

At last year\'s Reynolds meeting, loan forgiveness was ranked very highly as a way to get residents interested in a geriatrics fellowship. This has now been accomplished in South Carolina. Dr. Eleazer presented the innovative new loan repayment program designed to attract more doctors with specialized training in geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry.
Developing a Rational Approach for Prioritizing Care for Patients with Complex Health Status

Dr. Durso focused on developing health care guidelines that address the complexity and heterogeneity to guide physicians in the care of older adult patients with complex health status.
