New video tutorials to help you use POGOe
A new feature has been added to help answer some of the more detailed questions that POGOe users ask. Video tutorials will help by directing you through using different parts of the website. The first video provides a beginner’s guide to the process of submitting materials to POGOe. More videos will be added to help explain things like uploading a document or narrowing down your search. If there’s a specific topic that you would like to be covered, send an email to let us know!

Geropsychiatric Nursing Competency Enhancements

Those in clinical practice routinely see older adults with undiagnosed or undertreated mental health problems. These elders usually present with physical complaints or for monitoring of chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension. It takes a skilled practitioner to move beyond the obvious and discern the presence of mental health issues. This skill is invaluable since nearly one in five older women have some type of psychiatric disorder, with depression being the most common (Colenda et al., 2010).

The Geropsychiatric Nursing Collaborative, with support from the American Academy of Nursing, has recognized the burgeoning need for psychiatric competencies among all levels of nurses by developing Geropsychiatric Nursing Competency Enhancements to help educators prepare nurses to be competent in the care of older adults with mental health concerns and psychiatric/substance misuse disorders. Many of these competencies are applicable to physician as well as nursing practice.

The Geriatric Mental Health Foundation – To complement the February Editor's Choice, Geropsychiatric Nursing Competency Enhancements, this month's featured site focuses on the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation. The organization's website provides useful information about common issues for older adults with mental health issues. Topics covered include Alzheimer's Disease, dementia, depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. The information is presented for both caregivers and patients. You can easily search the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology registry for a Geriatric Psychiatrist in your area, and there is a list of useful websites that you can browse to find more information on these topics.
