** Virtual Goody Bag and Teaching Tips **View the best of the best instructional and assessment geriatrics-related materials from 40 teaching institutions funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to develop or expand geriatrics teaching to medical students, residents in primary care and non-primary care disciplines, fellows, and community-based practitioners. POGOe has hosted a Virtual Goody Bag with links to all of the products that were showcased during this year's Reynolds Grantee Annual Meeting, held October 21-23 in Las Vegas, NV. Also available is a compilation of Teaching Tips created by the Reynolds grantees. These tips were put together by the grantees themselves based on what they successfully implemented at their institution and that could be replicated at other medical schools. For more information, please visit POGOe today!
** Upgrades to POGOe website ** Recently we have completed work on several changes to the site. We appreciate all the support and input we’ve received! Here are some of the most interesting changes that have been made: Video/Audio streaming. You can now view the documents provided with each product directly from the product page instead of navigating to a new page. This way you can easily scroll down to see the product description without using the back button on your browser. This means that movies and podcasts are now playable directly from POGOe. When you click on the Document Title, a viewing window will open within the product page and your movie or podcast will play. This feature will only apply to a few types of audio and video files at this time, but the system will be expanded to include all applicable file types. Stay tuned! Submission Form upgrades. The product submission form has been improved to add more flexibility. The lengthy Product Information tab has been split in two allowing a faster scroll to make a specific edit. The Authors tab now allows you to choose a name from a preexisting list eliminating the need to type in the information of a repeat submitter. Furthermore, we have updated the Documents tab allowing you to change the name of each document after an upload. Usage Reports. Authors can now view usage reports on their POGOe products by going to a tab located next to the product title called “Statistics”. This tab will provide information such as number of views, number of downloads (if a product includes documents), and more! For more information on how to make your product easier for users to find and increase your product rank, contact the editors at Editor@POGOe.org.
WINNER: Product of the Year at the 2009 Reynolds Grantees Meeting in Las Vegas, NV SmartPrescribe Lesson 5: Principles of Rational Prescribing By Drs. Kaycee M. Sink and Hal H. Atkinson Among the domains in the AAMC Geriatric Competencies for Medical Students, Medication Management is challenging to teach given the expansive nature of the topic as well as the danger of subjecting learners to endless rote memorization of drugs, their side effect profiles as well as their use or avoidance in the care of the older adult patient. Fortunately, the recipients of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation’s grant to Strengthen Physicians’ Training in Geriatrics have developed educational products addressing this issue to make learning medication management interactive, fun and engaging. One of these high-quality educational products is Principles of Rational Prescribing from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which was the Winner of the 2009 Product of the Year at the recent Annual Reynolds Grantees Meeting in Las Vegas, NV. Developed by Kaycee M. Sink, MD, MAS and Hal H. Atkinson, MD, it is one of five lessons in the SmartPrescribe curriculum developed to teach learners about the need for evidence-based prescribing and the influence that drug company marketing has on medical practice. Intended users of the product include medical students during their clinical years, housestaff as well as practicing health care providers.
